Plot summary
Alice Ackerman performs on the cam site FreeGirlsLive as Lola and follows her ranking closely, hoping to reach first place. Her mother thinks she works in web development, and her younger brother Jordan wants her to tell the truth. Among her regular viewers are Barney, whom she agrees to meet in person, and Arnold, who gets a job in her area. One night she stages a suicide on camera and then reveals it was a stunt. One morning she cannot get into her account, though the channel is still streaming with someone who matches her appearance and mannerisms. She contacts customer service, which tells her a replay is impossible, and messages the channel, where the Lola onscreen answers her. The other camgirls call the situation strange and deny responsibility for it.

- Cam's police-interrogation scene was drawn from writer Isa Mazzei and other sex workers being dismissed and hit on when they asked for help; the officer's line "What's the weirdest thing you've ever had to do?" was in fact asked of Mazzei by several Hollywood executives once they learned she had been a cam model.
- Much of Cam came from writer Isa Mazzei's own years as a camgirl: the plot in which Lola's image is stolen was drawn from Mazzei's camming videos being pirated and reposted without credit to her.
- Writer Isa Mazzei, a former camgirl, first wanted to make a documentary about camming but decided the medium failed to explain it, telling Vice that people "still didn't fully get it", and chose horror instead.
