Plot summary
Kelly Collins, fourteen, is a fashion-loving teenager in New York's Greenwich Village, with an art school and a best friend, Amanda, until her mother marries Brigadier General Joe Maxwell. When he becomes Commandant of the George Washington Military Academy upstate, the area's only school, Kelly has to enroll there and give up her clothes for fatigues. On her first day she befriends Carla, a cadet who has been at the academy a long time. Fitting in and obeying orders comes hard, above all because of Cadet Captain Jennifer Stone, who wants Cadet Major Brad Rigby's attention for herself. Kelly is drawn to Brad as well, and the two cadets compete for it.
