Plot summary
Rudy "Disco" Gambola is due to testify at the courthouse in Riverside, California. Trabucco, a killer who has been eliminating the other witnesses, is the man waiting for him. He takes a room at the Ramona Hotel across the street and sets up his rifle. In the room beside his, Victor Clooney, a television censor, calls his estranged wife Celia and is turned down. Victor then tries to end his own life, and the noise draws Trabucco, who cannot afford the police guarding the courthouse below. To stop him, Trabucco agrees to drive him to the Institute for Sexual Fulfillment, the clinic where Celia has become fascinated by its director, Dr. Hugo Zuckerbrot.

- Two weeks into shooting Buddy Buddy, Billy Wilder decided that putting two comedians together did not work and that he needed a serious actor like Clint Eastwood as the hit man instead of Walter Matthau.
- Billy Wilder and Iz Diamond wrote the Buddy Buddy script in three months, which Wilder called "a record for us," then had to sit on it until the Actors Guild strike ended and Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau were available.
- Buddy Buddy ended Billy Wilder's directing career: after it, he and Iz Diamond worked up several ideas for another film, but none came to fruition, leaving it his final picture and their last collaboration.
