Plot summary
Consul Jean Buddenbrook loves his children and expects them to set their own happiness aside whenever the family grain firm needs it. His daughter Tony is the first to feel that expectation. On holiday she has a romance with Morten Schwarzkopf, a medical student whose family is modest, and her father instead arranges her marriage to Bendix Grünlich, a Hamburg businessman. Tony's two brothers, Thomas and Christian, are sent abroad to learn the trade, in Amsterdam and London; Thomas is the elder of the two. The Buddenbrooks are among the first families of Lübeck, a Baltic port where their business has prospered for generations.
