Plot summary
Tom Buchanan is on his way home to West Texas after a stay in Mexico, carrying the money he needs to start a ranch of his own. He stops in Agry, a border town in California run by the Agry family, and punches Roy Agry, a drunken hothead who declares he is going to kill him. A young vaquero, Juan de la Vega, kills Roy. When Tom steps into the scuffle around Juan's arrest, he is taken in as well. The town settles on the account that the two men planned Roy's killing together, and the judge, Simon Agry, Roy's father, arranges a trial.

- Budd Boetticher judged Charles Lang's credited screenplay unsuitable and asked his regular writer, Burt Kennedy, to rewrite it, but since Lang's wife was gravely ill and he needed the money, Kennedy let Lang keep both the salary and the screen credit.
- The film's score recycled stock music cues that were also used in the 1958-1961 TV series Sea Hunt, with stock music credited to Mischa Bakaleinikoff, George Duning, Heinz Roemheld and Paul Sawtell.
