Plot summary
The 2021 Taliban offensive brings two decades of war in Afghanistan, and the American occupation alongside it, to a close. As the Taliban extend their control, women are barred from studying past sixth grade, from jobs and from going out unaccompanied. Sharifa, once a government employee, is confined to her home. Zahra, a dentist who can no longer practice, turns her former clinic into a base for organizing activists. Taranom, exiled for her activism, lives as a refugee in Pakistan. Safe houses shelter women who flee across the border. When schools are shut, women demonstrate and are met with water cannons and tear gas. Elementary and middle school girls chant slogans against the Taliban.
Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bread & Roses (2023)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Most of Bread and Roses was shot by the three Afghan women it follows, plus one extra cameraperson, who filmed on phones and cameras for a year, because the production decided it was unsafe for film crews or director Sahra Mani to enter Afghanistan.
- Director Sahra Mani left Kabul less than a month before the city fell to the Taliban, not knowing she would never return, and the three women featured in the film had all left Afghanistan by 2023.
- Before Bread and Roses, director Sahra Mani had to shelve her documentary Kabul Melody, about a co-educational music school, after the Taliban destroyed the school.
- Director Sahra Mani called Bread and Roses sanitized, saying it shows protesters in Afghanistan being attacked with water cannons but not the protesters there who were kidnapped and killed.
