Plot summary
In 2001, Eric O'Neill, a computer specialist at the FBI who hopes to become a field agent, is recruited by agent Kate Burroughs. She sends him to serve as assistant to Robert Hanssen, a veteran of the bureau who has been brought back from the State Department to lead a new division on information assurance. Kate asks Eric to write notes on Hanssen's behavior and pass them to her, saying the older man is under investigation over his private life. Hanssen keeps their dealings formal at first and complains about the bureau's outdated technology and its preference for agents who carry guns. He gradually takes Eric under his wing, and as a devout Catholic in Opus Dei he presses Eric and his wife Juliana to return to the church. Juliana resents his intrusions.
