Plot summary

At Boys State in Austin, a thousand teenage boys from across Texas are divided at random into the Nationalist and Federalist parties and set about building a representative government of their own. Ben Feinstein, a conservative from San Antonio and a bilateral amputee, is among them. Robert MacDougall, a right-wing boy from Austin, and Steven Garza, a progressive from a working-class family, both want the Nationalist nomination for governor. Candidates must gather thirty signatures to reach the primary ballot; MacDougall clears the requirement easily, and Garza manages it just before the deadline. René Otero, a progressive from Chicago, campaigns for the Nationalist state chairmanship.
