Plot summary

Lila Coletti is a psychiatrist at a prison, where she treats the criminally insane, a job with dangerous patients and long, erratic hours. Her marriage is ending, and her husband Paul gains custody of their two daughters, partly because of that work. One of her patients, Ed Baikman, a man considered cured, is released into a halfway house, and he forms an attachment to Lila; his romantic overtures to her have been rebuffed. When Paul and his girlfriend are murdered, Lila becomes the focus of the investigation, and Macy Kobacek, the detective on the case, is also her lover, and he stands by her.
