Plot summary

Interviews with friends, colleagues and opponents, along with archival footage, carry the story of political strategist Lee Atwater. A blues-playing operative from the South, he worked with Karl Rove, Ronald Reagan, Roger Stone and Paul Manafort and reached the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee. Atwater revived the party's Southern Strategy, courting white Southern voters by way of racism against African Americans, and he helped shape the elections of Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Democrats angered by the Willie Horton episode of 1988 cast him as a remorseless political assassin, and one congresswoman called him the most evil man in America. The documentary also examines his irreverent sense of humor and his unapologetic view of politics as war.
