Plot summary

Jacob Felsen is twelve and sleeps badly, because he is afraid of the dark. He lives with his mother Isabel and his stepfather Davis, who have had enough of his night terrors. After he is caught dancing in his late grandmother's dress and suspended from school, they send him to a boarding school in the wilderness. The place is run by Dr. and Mrs. Sherman. His classmates are the twins Lenny and Calvin, Phil, who has burn scars, Frederic, who has Tourette's, Elwood Ramsay, and Christine Holcomb, the manipulative daughter of Davis's boss, whom Jacob met once at dinner with her family. Dr. Sherman's classes are Bible study sessions, and his discipline is corporal punishment.
