Plot summary
In Venice, in St. Mark's Square, Stephen Blume thinks back on the marriage he lost and asks himself why he cheated on Nina, the wife he still loves. She had come home to find him in his bathrobe with his secretary hidden behind the bedroom door, and she walked out. Blume, whose law practice is divorce, dates other women but takes no satisfaction in it and misses his married life. Nina, a social worker, tries new experiences, yoga among them, and begins seeing Elmo, a musician twelve years younger than she is. Once the divorce is final, Blume tries to win Nina back, humiliating himself along the way, though he and Elmo get along.
