Plot summary
Lynn and Doug Kaines own an exotic furniture design company, and Lynn is in the first term of a pregnancy. They travel to Mexico to scout a location. On the nighttime drive back toward the United States, with Lynn at the wheel, the car strikes a police officer in the road. Rather than report the accident and risk a Mexican jail, where the Kaines believe a person is presumed guilty, they leave him at the roadside and go home, where they have the front of the car repaired quietly. Then Jake Shell, a vagabond in a battered camper truck, arrives at their house asking for work and letting them know he witnessed what happened in Mexico. He wants payment for his silence, and the pair must decide how far they will let him push them.
