Plot summary
At Box Canyon Camp, a camp for boys in the southwest whose motto promises to turn them into cowboys, six cabin mates carry home-life troubles that have left them unable to fit in with anyone. The other campers and the staff treat Teft, Cotton, Shecker, Goodenow and the brothers Lally 1 and Lally 2 as misfits, so the six band together. Their counselor, Wheaties, takes them to a buffalo preserve where hunters shoot the penned animals. Wheaties compares the boys to those buffalo, dumb creatures taking up space. The six resolve to return and release the herd, and they set out on a multi-day walk back with no real plan, questioning the trip along the way.

- Barry De Vorzon and Perry Botkin Jr.'s score for the film included an instrumental called "Cotton's Dream", which became the theme song of the soap opera The Young and the Restless. After ABC's Wide World of Sports used it in a montage of Romanian gymnast Nadia Comăneci at the 1976 Summer Olympics, it was released as "Nadia's Theme".
