Plot summary
Eddie Turner, a soldier in Vietnam, steps on a land mine and loses both arms and both legs. His fiancée, the physicist Winifred Walker, turns for help to her former teacher, Dr. Stein, who has won a Nobel Prize for his work on the DNA genetic code and lives in a castle-like home in Los Angeles. She meets his patients: Eleanor, ninety years old but looking fifty, and Bruno, whose lower legs were reattached through laser beam fusion and a DNA solution, one leg tiger-striped from an unknown RNA problem. Stein's assistant Malcomb shows an interest in Winifred. Eddie, abused by an orderly at a veterans hospital, consents to experimental surgery and receives new arms. Malcomb confesses his feelings for Winifred, is told she will marry Eddie once the operations end, and taints the solution used for Eddie's legs.
