Plot summary
In 1932, with Manchuria under Japanese occupation, corrupt army leaders set out to take over Japan's karate dojos for their own ends. On the southern island of Kyushu, a detachment of soldiers orders the Shibahara dojo vacated for army use. Taikan, one of the senior students, challenges the detachment's leader, Captain Tanihara. Choei tries to stop him, and a soldier slashes his arm. Giryu helps Taikan drive the soldiers off. Their master, Eiken Shibahara, dies before he can pass on the black belt, leaving the three senior pupils to decide which of them deserves it and to work out what his teaching of karate meant.
