Plot summary
Jason Shepherd is 14 and lives in Greenbury, Michigan, where his habit of lying has worn down his father's trust. Failing to hand in a creative writing assignment, he is given three hours to submit it or repeat English in summer school. He writes a story called "Big Fat Liar" and rides his sister's bike to turn it in, but a limousine knocks him down and the essay ends up in the producer's papers. Marty Wolf, in town to shoot a film, keeps the story. Jason is sent to summer school because he cannot prove what happened. At the movies with his friend Kaylee, he sees the trailer for a film made from his story, and the two fly to Los Angeles to retrieve the essay and win back his father's trust.
