Plot summary
Paul Connolly grew up in a children's home, and the years he spent there as a boy still sit with him. A police investigation into the suicide of his boyhood friend opens the old wounds again, and he is forced to recall that childhood. He is also trying to build a relationship with Anthea, and the memories and his fragile state make that difficult. Paul wants to face the people he holds responsible for his shattered childhood and for the death of his friend. The story is based on true events.

- Big Boys Don't Cry was shot under the working title Six from Eight, which Paul Connolly explained refers to the eight boys in his children's home: six of them had killed themselves before they were 30 because they were abused, and he says he is the only one of them not in prison or dead.
- The film tells the true story of Paul Connolly, born in Billericay in the early 1960s, who arrived at St. Leonard's children's home in Hornchurch at two weeks old and was physically, psychologically and sexually abused by its staff; he remained illiterate until he was 25.
- Paul Connolly developed a violent lifestyle and in 2000 was sentenced to ten years in prison for grievous bodily harm; from then on he tried to leave his violent past behind, and after his release he married and has two sons with his wife.
