Plot summary
Bhotbhoti's daadi raises him beside the Ganges after his parents die, and from her stories he comes to love the one about mermaids and the world beneath the water. He holds on to it after her death, and a film he finds, The Mermaid Princess, strengthens it. The DVD sits in a trunk under his bed, and each night he puts it into a battered player he has collected and repaired, which brings him Ariel, the mermaid. The river pulls at him. While his friends drink, he dives into the water to look for his mermaid queen, who stays out of reach.
