Plot summary
Once a thriving Black college in Ware, Ohio, Ware College now has few students and less money. Dean Hargreaves meets the instructors Drury and Annabelle Brown and reports that Benjamin Ware III, grandson of the founder, claims his grandfather's estate is destitute. They suspect the claim is false, and that it follows Annabelle's rejection of Ware's advances. Their answer is a reunion: invitations go out to the college's famous alumni, asking for financial help. Many of them could give. Lucius Jordan, they assume, cannot: a shy student who loved Annabelle and dropped out under Ware's pressure. But the man is now Louis Jordan, king of swing, who leads the Tympani Band.
