Plot summary
On patrol in the Atlantic in August 1943, the U.S. submarine USS Tiger Shark is ordered to collect survivors that a British patrol plane has spotted adrift. The boat brings aboard Claire Paige, a nurse, and two men from the British hospital ship Fort James, which went down two days earlier; one of the men is hurt. A survivor reports seeing a German U-boat on the surface just before the hospital ship was hit. A German destroyer finds the Tiger Shark, and depth charges damage the boat. Inside the narrow compartments, voices with no source and other strange events begin to trouble those aboard.

- Dimension Films asked director David Twohy to re-edit Below to secure a PG-13 rating; he refused, and the studio instead gave the film a limited theatrical release on October 11, 2002 with little advertising.
- For the exteriors of the fictional submarine USS Tiger Shark, the producers used a retired World War II-era U.S. Navy submarine that is now a museum ship in Muskegon, Michigan, and had it towed out into Lake Michigan to film.
- Below began as Proteus; in May 2000 David Twohy was hired to direct and re-write it, with Darren Aronofsky moving into a producer role, and the original script's sci-fi elements were dropped and reworked as a ghost story.
