Plot summary
Duane Bradley and his brother Belial, surgically separated conjoined twins, survive a fall from a hotel window and wake in a hospital, where their story reaches the news and ends any hope of a private life. Granny Ruth, who saw them on television, comes for them with her granddaughter Susan and takes them to her home, where she looks after an extended family of deformed people. Belial is given a basket and a nursery room, and Ruth tells him that in her house they live by her rules. Among the residents is Eve, a mute bodyless torso who stays in the attic. The editor Lou wants the journalist Marcie to find out where the brothers have gone.
