• Before Mohanlal took on the lead, Jijo Punnoose planned Barroz as an international project in English and Hispanic languages and sent his novel to Will Smith, Morgan Freeman, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington and Idris Elba, considering them for the Afrikaner ghost.
• Barroz 3D was halted after a week of shooting in Kochi by the second COVID-19 lockdown; with 24 cast and crew infected and foreign actors sent home, the film neared cancellation and its treasure cellar set was dismantled on producer Antony Perumbavoor's instruction until Mohanlal revived it in November 2021.
• Jijo Punnoose, author of the novel behind Barroz 3D, left the film in May 2022 after his original screenplay and production design went unused, and asked for his name to be removed from the screenplay credits.
• For the shot of Barroz walking on the walls of the treasure cellar, Jijo Punnoose came back to rig a rotating set — his only involvement after leaving the film — and a gravity-illusion sequence reused the trick he had used in My Dear Kuttichathan.
• Prithviraj Sukumaran opted out over scheduling conflicts with Kaduva and Aadujeevitham and was replaced by Tuhin Menon, while child lead Shayla McCaffrey was replaced by Indo-British actress Maya Rao West because of her academic studies and noticeable physical changes.
• Barroz is rooted in a 17th-century Portuguese-Afro-Indian myth from the Malabar Coast about a hidden treasure of the D'Gama family, touching the maritime history of Portugal, Spain, Africa and India, and locally known as kappiri muthappan.
