Plot summary
Jake Remy and his band of mercenaries rob a shipment of silver and weapons and ride for the river, the only way into Mexico. The crossing belongs to Travis, who operates the barge that carries people and goods over the water. Warned that Remy is coming, Travis and his woman, Nola, move the people of the nearby settlement and a band of passing settlers to the far bank. When the gang reaches the river, Travis will not come back for them, believing Remy's men would kill the people already safe on the other side. A standoff settles over the river, with people from both camps left stranded on the wrong bank.
