Plot summary
Phineas Taylor Barnum's story runs from 1835 to 1881. He defends the noble art of humbug and has a philosophy to go with it, along with a freewheeling ambition to make a fortune. He buys Joice Heth, a woman said to be the oldest in the world, and exhibits her as a sideshow attraction. He builds a museum of curiosities, which his wife Charity supports, though she would like him to settle down.
