Plot summary
Barbara is a physician at Berlin's Charité hospital until an exit visa application costs her the post and lands her in a small clinic near the Baltic Sea, where the Stasi keeps her under watch. She works in pediatric surgery under André, the clinic's chief physician, and holds herself apart from colleagues she suspects of reporting on her. For the hours the Stasi cannot account for, she is punished with searches of her home and her person. On her bicycle she slips away to stash money and to meet Jörg, her West German lover, who is arranging her escape to Denmark. André's attempts at closeness meet her refusal, though she is not indifferent to him.
