Plot summary
On the island of Amantido, Banana Joe lives in a rainforest village, trading bananas for whatever the community needs and looking after its many children. When the henchmen of the gangster Torsillo come ashore to build a banana processing plant and take over the crop, Joe throws them off the island. Torsillo finds out that Joe trades without a license and arranges with the police to have him arrested, and on his next delivery the authorities seize his boat over the missing papers. New to city life and barely able to read, he goes looking for help, falls in with a con man named Manuel, and becomes infatuated with Dorianne, a singer at a nightclub owned by Torsillo.
