Plot summary
In the winter of 1942, Henan Province suffers a famine that drought, locusts, windstorms and disease make worse. Fan Dianyuan, a wealthy landlord, still has plenty of food for his family and the villagers. Bandits rob the village and burn it, and Fan flees west with his wife, daughter, daughter-in-law and servant Shuanzhu, joining fellow villager Xialu and his family on the road. Japanese bombing throws the refugees into chaos, and NRA soldiers steal Fan's food and money. Brother Sim keeps preaching the Catholic faith across the starving province and takes refuge under Father Megan. Theodore H. White, a correspondent for Time, journeys to Henan to look into the famine.
