Plot summary
Four infants, two in the countryside and two in cities, are followed from birth to their first birthday without a narrator. Ponijao is born in a hut in Opuwo, Namibia, while her mother coats her pregnant belly with red ochre. Bayar arrives in a Mongolian hospital, tightly wrapped, and rides home to the family's rural area on a motorcycle. Hattie is born in San Francisco and lies in a newborn intensive care ward among machines and medical staff. Mari grows up in Tokyo. The camera catches small everyday scenes: Mari angry over a toy, Hattie restless at an organized play group, Bayar in his bath as a goat drinks from the water, and Ponijao scuffling on the ground with a sibling.
