Plot summary
Babar grows up in the Great Forest with his mother and his friends Arthur and Celeste. A poacher shoots his mother, and Babar runs. After days of wandering he arrives at a city, where he spends an eventful day exploring, tasting ice cream for the first time, blocking traffic and frightening the people who live there. An older woman, Madame, gives him money for clothes, and he picks out a green suit and a hat. She asks him to live with her and brings him up as she would a human child, with lessons in arithmetic, manners and driving. Babar likes his new life, though he sometimes remembers his friends and his mother in the Great Forest.
