Plot summary
Deva works with Dass, moving unlicensed pre-release films on disc and other small contraband, mostly by air, and his widowed mother Kaveri does not approve of the career he has chosen. Kamalesh, whose father once did business with the pair, wants their Diwali piracy trade for himself and works through police-backed channels to foil the operation. He arranges a raid on the hideout, after which an inspector offers Dass the chance for one of his men to take the blame. Deva tries to do so, but Chitti Babu, a man unconnected with the gang, takes responsibility instead. Chitti then joins the group and befriends Deva, and the two carry contraband on runs abroad for months. Deva also meets Chitti's sister Yamuna.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ayan's title risked being changed because the word was said to be borrowed from Sanskrit, putting it at odds with Tamil Nadu's Entertainment Tax Exemption Act of 2006; the producers of Aegan, then also in production, faced the same problem, but the controversy was later dropped.
- Suriya sported 10 different looks in Ayan, the most for an actor at that time, and his physique was key to playing a powerful and active youngster.
- The song "Nenje Nenje" was shot on the sand dunes of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Dune 7 and Deadvlei in Namibia, in freezing temperature.
- The film's stunt sequences were shot at Binny Mills using a huge set built to resemble an airport, while another fight was shot in Cape Town, South Africa.
