Plot summary
In 1943, with the war raging in Europe, Arturo Giammarresi waits tables at a New York restaurant. He is in love with Flora Guarneri, the niece of the owner, Alfredo, but Alfredo has already promised her to Carmelo, the son of the mafia boss Don Tano. Flora tells Arturo that only her father, back in Sicily, can overrule her uncle, and the two have a photograph taken by the Brooklyn Bridge for Arturo to carry to him. Arturo has no money for the crossing. He joins the U.S. Army, which is getting ready to land on the island, and his ineptitude lands him with the pack donkeys.
