Plot summary
In 1960s Japan, a young Takeshi Kitano drops out of school and takes to the theaters of the Asakusa district of Tokyo, where the famed entertainer Senzaburo Fukami takes him on as an apprentice. Fukami keeps him rehearsing the manners of an entertainer through the day and the night, awake or asleep, until the persona becomes his own. Around the two of them the halls are drawing smaller crowds, because people are staying home with their televisions. The story comes from the memoir Kitano published in 1988.
