Plot summary
Frankie McCourt, five years old, lives with his parents, Malachy and Angela, and his brothers in a small apartment in Brooklyn. When his baby sister Margaret dies, Angela slips into depression and the boys depend on neighbors for food. Relatives in Ireland arrange the family's passage back, and in Limerick Angela's mother and her sister Aggie greet them coolly, disapproving of Malachy's northern roots. Malachy cannot hold a job and whatever he earns goes to drink. The new house has flea-ridden mattresses, the street's only lavatory sits at their door, and rain and the nearby Shannon spread disease through the lanes.
