Plot summary
Herschel Greenbaum and his wife Sarah are Jewish laborers in an Eastern European shtetl. After Russian Cossacks destroy their village, they emigrate to America in 1919. Herschel finds work at a pickle factory and saves money to buy two graves in a Jewish cemetery. Sarah is pregnant with their son. One day Herschel falls into a vat of pickles, and the factory closes for health reasons. He stays brined for a hundred years and wakes in Brooklyn in 2019. The one family member left to him is Ben, his great-grandson, who works as a freelance app developer.
