Plot summary
Lucifer drives a train of condemned souls up to Heaven with Ms. Merrywood aboard, and God takes up the crisis with his top officer, The Agent. The Ticket-Keeper says the carnies cannot yet fight Heaven; Lucifer brushes him aside to entertain a cloaked visitor and opens a book of Aesop's fables. Among a new group of Applicants welcomed into Heaven, in a flashback, are best friends June and Cora. June takes a Number 1 armband from The Designer and leads Cora off to explore. The Translators arrest and question them. The Agent intervenes, and attraction springs up between him and June, drawing negative press from The Watchword. God orders The Agent to seduce June and expose her heresy.
