Plot summary
Cornelius, a pompous music critic and would-be composer, comes to Villa Tremolo, the summer house of the celebrated cellist Felix, to gather material for a biography. Felix's impresario Jillker lets him in, and the chauffeur Tristan is on hand, yet Felix himself never appears for an interview. What Cornelius finds instead is the household of women around the cellist. Adelaide identifies herself as the legal wife, while the others, each with her own nickname and her own day of the week, hold other places in Felix's life. Rehearsals for a worldwide radio concert are under way at the house. Cornelius, notepad and quill in hand, takes down everything the women tell him about the man he has come to write about.
