Plot summary
Vivek is seventeen, and his middle-class family in India has reached the point where coaching for the highly competitive entrance exams for the Indian Institutes of Technology becomes the next step. His father regards an IIT degree as a moral certificate and wants his only son to have one. Vivek leaves home for a residential preparatory school in Kota, the center for that coaching. He is there for two years, moving through the ordinary stages of Indian adolescence, while his parents are the ones who do the growing up.
