Plot summary
Money is short in the Kerkeling household, so Hape and his elder brother Matthes live now on one of their grandparents' farms, now on the other. His father Heinz and mother Margret raise him among Oma Änne, Opa Willi, Opa Hermann Kerkeling and Bertha. Hape is the more mischievous of the two brothers, and after he sees his first carnival parade he is drawn to pageantry and to show; at home he works on ways to entertain. Humor becomes his way of keeping himself steady, years before anyone discovers him. The story comes from Kerkeling's own book about his childhood years.
