Alison (2016) on Netflix

Plot summary

Alison is a hybrid documentary, built from intimate interviews and staged re-enactments. It tells the story of a South African woman, Alison, abducted, gang raped, stabbed and abandoned on the outskirts of a nature reserve in 1994. Fairytale undertones turn its participants into archetypes, and Alison speaks as her older self while re-enactments show her as a young woman. The film draws on a book about her life, I Have Life. It reaches past the attack to the woman herself and to the people she has helped through her life, and it holds trauma to be ongoing, something that can surface at any moment.
