Plot summary
After forty years in space, Dr. Ivan Hood and his companion Kelly return with two other astronauts to an Earth ruled by giant termite-like aliens. Near the ruins of Portland, Oregon, human bounty hunters seize the group and take them to a work camp. The invaders reached the planet two decades earlier, using E.M.P. bombs to cripple its defenses before settling in to feed on its wood. Human overseers keep order in the camp, and life under the occupation has left the captives unable to read or write. Hearing that President Demsky may still be alive with an army behind him, Dr. Hood and Kelly plan a way out.
