Plot summary
Alice and her sister sit beside a brook, and Alice throws stones into the water. She drops stones into a cup of tea at home. A creaking noise turns her toward the stuffed rabbit in its glass case; the rabbit comes alive, dresses and uses scissors from a hidden drawer to break free. Alice chases it into a writing desk on a hill. She arrives in a cellar, falls into a dustbin and rides an elevator past shelves of objects to a heap of leaves. The leaves stir and uncover another desk, where she finds a small key and a miniature door. Through it the rabbit disappears into a painted garden, but Alice is too big to follow. She drinks an unlabeled bottle of dark liquid and becomes a china doll shaped like her.

- In Alice, the actress playing the title role also narrates the entire film and voices every other character; after each line of dialogue, a close-up of her mouth is shown saying "said (insert character's name)".
- Alice relies heavily on stop-motion animation but, unlike most traditional stop-motion films, it builds its special effects without using any miniature sets at all.
- For Švankmajer, a prolific director of short films for more than two decades, Alice became his first venture into feature-length filmmaking.
