Plot summary
The cabin's past reaches back to Isaac, a slave owner who admits to Rosa that he sold their son William not to the kind owner he promised her but to the cruel Mr. Armfield; Rosa hides a knife in the fireplace, and a mob later lynches her at a nearby tree. In the present, renters Alex and Zoe arrive for a weekend, and Alex proposes by the fire. A masked killer called Pleatherface and his mother have already broken into the cabin and gone into hiding there. A sheriff stops by to warn of a killer in the area, recognizes that the log in the hearth came from the hanging tree, and tells them not to light it again.

- Casper Kelly shot the film in secret over 15 days so it would be delivered in time for the holiday season, filming in Atlanta with local actors and crews.
- The film was originally to open with two hours of the fireplace yule log sequence, but a higher-profile time slot led Kelly to cut it to just two minutes before the home invasion and murder sequence.
- Adult Swim Yule Log was Adult Swim's first feature-length project and its first horror film, and it was Casper Kelly's first feature-length film; Williams Street had previously made two theatrical films, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters and Mister America.
- After Warner Bros. Animation merged with Adult Swim's parent company, Cartoon Network, Kelly faced post-production delays and six additional editors following the departure of executive Walter Newman, who had greenlit the project; the process was compressed into six months, each editor getting a month.
- The opening was a single unbroken 20-minute scene, hard on a shoot so short that Kelly could not experiment with the setup or rely on cuts and close-ups later; leads Laing and Miles learned the setup days before filming and rehearsed repeatedly.
- Kelly called adding themes about American chattel slavery a risk he wanted to take, saying that after uncovering his own family's history of slave ownership he felt he had a personal perspective on the issue and on moral relativism.
- Kelly pitched the concept directly to Adult Swim thanks to his working history with the network, and a slush fund let Adult Swim executives approve the project without higher corporate approval.
