Plot summary
Abraham Lincoln is ten when his mother Nancy turns into a zombie and his father Thomas takes his own life beside her. He beheads her with a scythe and helps his community contain the outbreak. As president of a fractured nation, he hears that thirty men went to Confederate Fort Pulaski and one returned barely alive, carrying an illness that raises corpses. Lincoln takes the newly formed Secret Service to the fort, where Confederate survivors under General Stonewall Jackson and the infected attack them. A bite, a scratch or infected blood in the mouth or eyes means the same fate within a day. Agent Wilson Brown names the infected zombies, after a Bantu word his mother taught him, and Lincoln meets Mary Owens, an old flame now sheltering her daughter Sophia and a young Theodore Roosevelt.
