Plot summary
In Brooklyn, Abe is twelve and lives with his mother Rebecca, who is Jewish and Israeli, and his father Amir, who is Muslim and Palestinian. Both parents are atheists and make no religious demands on him, while his Israeli grandfather Benjamin wants a bar mitzvah and his Palestinian grandparents Aida and Salim want him to fast and avoid alcohol. Abe is passionate about food, experiments in the family kitchen and posts photos on his blog, Abecooks, and he prefers his online followers to real life friends. His parents sign him up for a summer cooking class; finding it easy, he sneaks out to the kitchen of Chico, a Brazilian cook who serves fusion food at pop up fairs. Chico lets him work in the kitchen, and Abe wants to unite the two sides of his family through cooking.
