Plot summary

Her father is losing his memory, confusing details of his late wife's life with his own and no longer able to recall her. The experience leaves her asking what makes a person who they are: memories, personality, a sense of self. A transhumanist friend argues that personality, intuition and the soul are quantifiable and can be replicated, and that researchers are working to copy a human through AI and biotech. She is incredulous and sets out to check. She meets neuroscientists, AI developers, philosophers, science fiction writers and transhumanist thinkers, asking each what makes us human and whether it can be copied. What she encounters includes avatars made from mindclones, brain organoids grown in dishes, and android robots that speak about beauty in the universe.
