Plot summary

Otto Anderson, a widower of 63, lives alone in a patio home outside Pittsburgh. His wife Sonya, a schoolteacher, died six months earlier, and since then he has kept to himself, sticking to routines and finding fault with the neighbors. Forced into retirement from the steel plant, he has shut off his utilities and decided to end his life so he can join her. He visits her grave and recalls the day they met, when he chased after a book she dropped on a train platform. His plans are interrupted when a young family moves in across the way: pregnant Marisol, her husband Tommy, and their daughters Abby and Luna, who keep turning up at his door for help. Anita, who lives nearby, also needs him, though he still resents her husband Reuben.
