Plot summary
Rising seas have drowned the coastal cities, and the surviving nations build humanoid robots called mechas to serve them. At a robotics company, David is the first mecha child made to feel love. He is placed with Monica Swinton and her husband Henry in Madison, New Jersey as a trial, while their own son Martin lies in suspended animation with a rare disease. Monica is uneasy at first, then activates the imprinting protocol that binds David to her and introduces him to Teddy, Martin's robotic teddy bear. When Martin is cured and brought home, David's place in the family becomes uncertain.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Stanley Kubrick began developing an adaptation of "Super-Toys Last All Summer Long" in the late 1970s, hiring the story's author Brian Aldiss to write a film treatment and asking Steven Spielberg to direct in 1985; the film labored in development hell and Kubrick fired Aldiss over creative differences in 1989.
- Julianne Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow were considered for the role of Monica Swinton before Frances O'Connor was cast, and Jerry Seinfeld was originally considered to voice and play the Comedian Robot before Chris Rock took the part.
- Gigolo Joe was originally conceived as a G.I. mecha, but writer Ian Watson suggested changing him to a male prostitute, prompting Kubrick to joke, "I guess we lost the kiddie market."
- The film's ending is often attributed to Steven Spielberg, but writer Ian Watson said the final script was very faithful to Kubrick's vision: "The final 20 minutes are pretty close to what I wrote for Stanley, and what Stanley wanted, faithfully filmed by Spielberg without added schmaltz."
- John Williams called his score an "homage a Kubrick", including echoes of György Ligeti's choral music, which Kubrick had used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, and, at Kubrick's request, a quotation of Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.
- Haley Joel Osment was Steven Spielberg's first and only choice for the role of David, and to portray the character he avoided blinking his eyes and "programmed" himself with good posture.
- To prepare to play Gigolo Joe, Jude Law studied the acting of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, whose movements the character emulates.
