Plot summary
The documentary traces the path of David Crowley, a veteran of the Iraq war who became a filmmaker and a voice in fringe politics. In 2010 he began work on Gray State, a feature set in a near future where an unchecked federal government tramples civil liberties. A trailer financed by crowdfunding drew an enthusiastic response from libertarians and Tea Party activists, as well as from people in the emerging alt-right. In January 2015 Crowley and his wife and child were found dead at their suburban Minnesota home. Conspiracy theorists seized on the deaths, speculating that a shadowy government had him killed because his film came too close to the truth. The documentary also looks at his time in the military and his struggle to finance and complete the project.
