Plot summary
Sophia Tolstaya speaks alone, recalling the thirty-six years she has spent married to Leo Tolstoy. They had thirteen children together, nine of whom survived. Sophia and Leo each kept diaries, and though they lived in the same house they often wrote letters to one another. Leo wants their diary entries read out loud when they have dinner guests. Sophia describes the joys of their life together and the struggles that accompany it. The couple argues often and is sometimes deeply unhappy, but they also share moments of passionate reconciliation. Her monologue is drawn from the letters and diaries the Tolstoys wrote.
